Great review, my AAC shoots MOA straight out of box off bipod with Barnes VOR-TX 168gr, if secured in rest probably shoot sub MOA. This is a solid rifle at a great price if you want to get into precision shooting, without dropping 3-5 grand and a year wait on a custom rifle.
Great review! Love mine! I polished the bore with tutle wax rubbing compound followed by polishing compound. Then I traeted it with Smooth Kote and burnished it with moly powder. The first day, igot a 0.357" group with Hornady 168gr. AMAX match ammo. Can't wait to get a load worked up for it!
I picked up the SPS tactical .308 and see no reason to buy anything else. the gun shoots hole in hole no problem at 100 yards and less than 5 inches at over 500 yards. Rifle also has plenty of after market options available for guys who want to build it up over time. Havent done it up yet but plan to. Thanks for the review.
Outstanding, detailed and comprehensive review! Thanks so much for your hard work and precision in getting such unbelievable photographs of every aspect of the rifle a prospective owner would want to know about. Especially helpful was the executive summary format used on the first page and your verification of important rifle specs such as weight and trigger pull weight and adjustment. Your are to be commended! This review will definitely influence my decision on whether to purchase.
Just a thought.... I bet a skim bedding job would help reduce some of those "one off flyers". With skim bedding and a good trigger it should be a consitent 5/8 MOA shooter!
I put my 700 AAC-SD in an Accuracy International 1.5 chassis system stock. I used a Atlas bipod with AI adaptor so I can insert it into the provided attachment point. I put a Primary Weapons Systems FSC 30 flash/brake on the barrel. On top I put a Night Force steel 20moa 1913 rail with a Night Force 3.5-15x56 Zero Stop scope mounted in Barrett Zero Gap 30mm rings. I sent the bolt to Phoenix Custom Rifles to have the bolt modified with a larger bolt handle knob. The only problem so far is that the chamber is so tight that I have to use new brass and handload it or purchase new loaded ammo. I have tried almost every brand of die to resize enough to get the bolt to close. As long as I load new brass it works fine. I have only fired a few rounds to get the chamber measurements for reloading. It is virtually impossible to use once fired military brass in my rifle. I am expecting a tack driver once I get a load worked up for it.
I went to the range today with my 700AAC-SD above, I was shooting 150 Sierra HPBT MK, RL15 powder and Federal 210 Match primers in WW brass. At 100 yds you could put a dime over three shot groups. I was sighting in so now I will see if the same repeats next time to the range. So far I am impressed with the rifle.
Great job mine is on the way and will be dropping it into a MDT TAC-21 platform looking foward to seeing how it preforms at 1,000 yards will keep posted. Again great job.
Have an SPS dropped into a B&C stock with a Bushnell 10 x 40 mil/mil. Shot 175 grain SMK's, 3 group shot at 100 yards into a single 3/8" hole. Could not be happier with this rifle.
Picked up one of these rifles a few weeks ago. Out of the box with cheap glass (didn't have glass for it as yet), off a bipod, using cheap Winchester 180gr SuperX hunting ammo, I was shooting 1.75" at 100yrds. I've since bedded the factory Hogue stock, the barrel is nice and free-floating now and the front stock does not make contact with the barrel when on a bipod or supported on a rest. Got a one piece EGW scope base and bedded the rear action part which was about 1/32" lower than the front. Mounted a new Millet TRS-1 scope on it and picked up some Hornady 168gr HPBT Match ammo too and will be testing her out on Wednesday. Fingers crossed for sub MOA. I'm sure it'll be mostly shooter error. lol
I commend you on your excellent, in-depth review. I plan to purchase one of these rifles within the week.
I do have one question: Did you ever contact Remington regarding the disparity in the trigger pull and if so, did they ever provide a satisfactory answer?
1st time out Bone stock 700 AAC-SD shooting federal 168 gr SMK shot two 5 shoot groups @ 200 yards .603" moa and .526" moa with less than 30 rounds through the rifle. I'm very happy with this rifle! Was going to replace the stock, but if it will shoot like this why bother.
Awesome work on the review. Appreciated.

ReplyDeleteI just received a Nightforce Direct mount and will be doing a review of this mount on this rifle in the near future.
